THE STICKERROAR GUIDE

Why Enlarging an Image Does Not Restore Detail

Understand the difference between increasing pixel dimensions and recovering information that was never in the source.

Updated

A black dandelion stem supports a seed head shaded in rainbow colors, with scattered seeds and black butterflies drifting upward to the right.

What to know

Resizing a small image can create more pixels without recovering missing detail. The result may have larger dimensions but still show soft edges or blocky features. Evaluate the actual appearance of the source, especially around lettering, rather than relying on pixel count alone.

Check your plan

  • Compare the original and enlarged edges.
  • Inspect fine text at the proposed output size.
  • Use a better original or reduce the print size.

A practical example

A small web thumbnail enlarged to several thousand pixels can still contain the same blurry lettering. A larger file is not necessarily a sharper original.

The cover is an artwork example from the catalog. Use the measurements and file checks above to evaluate your own project, rather than treating the image as a scale reference.
