THE STICKERROAR GUIDE

Checking Resolution After Cropping Artwork

Reassess image detail after a crop because fewer pixels may remain for the same finished size.

Updated

Golden autumn trees and dark pines line a blue lake beneath a distant snow-capped mountain, with the trees reflected in the still water.

What to know

Cropping can improve composition while reducing the pixels available for printing. If you enlarge the cropped subject back to the original physical size, its effective resolution changes. Keep the uncropped source and compare the cropped file at the actual dimensions you plan to order.

Check your plan

  • Check the cropped image's pixel dimensions.
  • Set the intended print size again.
  • Inspect the smallest retained detail.

A practical example

Cropping a pet's face from a distant photo may leave only a small portion of the original image. The full photo's resolution does not describe that crop.

The cover is an artwork example from the catalog. Use the measurements and file checks above to evaluate your own project, rather than treating the image as a scale reference.
