THE STICKERROAR GUIDE

Choosing Sticker Width and Height Together

Choose sticker width and height together using proportions. Work through a 3:1 design, identify the limiting dimension and check the finished footprint.

Updated

A 3-to-1 artwork rectangle scales from 6 by 2 inches to 4.5 by 1.5 inches; the finished border needs a separate check.

What to know

Width alone is an incomplete size description. A long quote and a round emblem can share the same width while occupying very different amounts of space. Record both dimensions and compare the artwork proportions with the space before deciding whether the design belongs there.

Check your plan

  • Identify the long edge of the artwork.
  • Measure the shorter available edge too.
  • Keep the illustration proportional instead of stretching it.

A practical example

A 5-inch-wide wordmark may suit a shallow area where a 5-inch circle would not. The width number does not make the two interchangeable.

Let the limiting dimension guide the scale

Suppose the artwork has a 3:1 width-to-height ratio. A 6-inch artwork width implies a 2-inch artwork height when scaled proportionally. If the usable height is only 1.5 inches, the same artwork would be 4.5 inches wide at that height. A 6-inch width by itself therefore does not establish that the design fits. These calculations concern the artwork; also account for the proposed finished border.

Write the available width and height next to the candidate finished dimensions. Compare both pairs before choosing a size. If only one dimension fails, squeezing the artwork along that axis can distort circles, faces and lettering.

Compare fit and readability together

Make a paper footprint for the candidate that fits. Check whether its smallest important detail remains readable. If fitting the space makes the message too small, use a different arrangement or a simpler design rather than stretching the same file.

Record width first and height second, with units and orientation, such as 4.5 inches wide × 1.5 inches high. That wording avoids confusing a horizontal design with a tall version using the same two numbers.

Put the check into practice

Compare the proposed footprint with the available options for custom car stickers, and include both dimensions when requesting a different size. Orders are requests without online payment; final production details require confirmation.
