THE STICKERROAR GUIDE

Simplifying a Busy Sticker Illustration

Remove details in order of importance so the finished sticker retains a clear subject.

Updated

A golden beer mug with a dark green handle sits between two upright golden grain stalks, topped by a rounded cap of cream foam.

What to know

A crowded illustration may contain several appealing ideas without a clear focal point. Decide what the viewer should notice first, then reduce secondary textures or decorations that compete with it. Test the simplified version at the intended dimensions before making further changes.

Check your plan

  • Name the main subject in one short phrase.
  • Remove an element that does not support it.
  • Compare the original and simplified versions at equal size.

A practical example

A character, slogan, stars, flames and frame may all fit digitally. Removing the flames and frame can give the face and words enough room to work together.

The cover is an artwork example from the catalog. Use the measurements and file checks above to evaluate your own project, rather than treating the image as a scale reference.
