THE STICKERROAR GUIDE

Using Negative Space in Sticker Artwork

Preserve intentional empty areas that help separate shapes and make the design easier to read.

Updated

What to know

Empty space can define a face, letter or silhouette as clearly as a drawn line. Filling every gap with decoration may make the picture harder to understand. Inspect the open areas at small size and decide which are essential to the design's identity.

Check your plan

  • Find the gaps that separate important shapes.
  • Compare them at the intended output size.
  • Avoid adding accents simply to fill empty space.

A practical example

The opening inside a crescent moon can give a curled cat room to read clearly. Additional stars in that opening may weaken the silhouette rather than improve it.

The cover is an artwork example from the catalog. Use the measurements and file checks above to evaluate your own project, rather than treating the image as a scale reference.
