Keep the meaning together
A line break changes both the shape of a quote and the way it is read. Start with the wording, then fit the lines to the available width. Do not stretch individual letters simply to make every line the same length.
The illustration uses “Take the scenic route” twice, with the same frame and letter size. Layout A reads “TAKE THE SCENIC / ROUTE”, leaving a short final line. Layout B reads “TAKE THE / SCENIC ROUTE”, keeping “scenic route” together. B suits this two-line example; A could still be intentional when emphasizing the final word. The example is a typography diagram, not a print sample.
Compare at the same finished size
Keep the outer sticker dimensions fixed when comparing layouts. Otherwise, a bigger example may look easier to read simply because it is bigger. Check the longest line, the spaces between lines and the distance from the lettering to the cut edge.
Print a paper mockup at the intended dimensions and measure it. Read it from the distance at which it will usually be seen. If the words are too small, shorten the wording, adjust the layout or choose a larger finished footprint; do not assume a sharper source file makes tiny text readable at any distance.
Match the line break to the outline
For a wide rectangular design, try one line and two lines before moving to a narrow column. For a round badge, shorter top and bottom lines can fit the shape, but leave enough room for the complete letterforms. An outline should not clip a descender or squeeze the last word against a curved edge.
Keep punctuation with the phrase it belongs to. With unfamiliar languages, have someone who reads the language check word boundaries and meaning; visual symmetry is not a substitute for correct wording.
Check the final file, not just the draft
- Confirm spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
- Compare two arrangements at the same dimensions and font size.
- Inspect small counters and spaces, such as the inside of A, B and R.
- Keep the intended white letters when removing an outside background.
- Confirm the complete outer cut dimensions before production.
